A Pediatrician's Thoughts on Lactation Cookies

Do lactation cookies work?

Behind supporting a mother's supply is a healthy diet and adequate nutrition.  Certainly as a new mother, remembering to eat and snack is a difficult task! These cookies are helpful in that they are easily portable and quick to eat.  Most cookie recipes do promote that the oats, flax, brewers yeast, and coconut all help support milk production. However, there is certainly a very deeply rooted argument that these cookies work based on a placebo effect.  In fact, medical evidence that supports the positive effect these cookies have is minimal but argue if it brings a new mother some assurance, then go for it! They're definitely a kind gift to make for a new mother and rest assured, they don’t cause lactation and anyone can eat them!
